Atmosphere: the white tables, blue chairs and metal-topped self-service areas in Google's staff restaurant are lit by a wall of floor-length windows and accessorised with a crowd of casually-dressed engineers and business people. There's proper crockery and cutlery for people eating in, while anyone pressed for time can grab a sandwich and a yoghurt from the stand by the door and make a quick return to their desks. Oh, and it's all free.
Worth queuing for: monkfish on a salmon supreme with tiger prawns; rack of Welsh lamb; steamed asparagus from Kent; fresh sushi; a wide range of salads. Arrive on the dot of noon on Thursdays or the line for curry will be out the door. Omelettes (cooked to order, free range eggs) are also popular at breakfast.
Clear signs (green, yellow and red representing very healthy, quite health and less healthy) indicate the nutritional value of each main meal, while fruit (including lychees, raspberries, bananas and apples) is freely available in the canteen and from stands throughout the company's offices. On the other hand, people with less willpower could easily succumb to a rich dessert or a chocolate bar from a snack rack. Or, given that they're free, to 412 of them - a quantity also known as "I'm sure my kaftan wasn't this tight last week".
Fresh food is locally sourced, where possible, while some snack options are fair trade.
Straight in the bin: a recent attempt at fish and chips wasn't entirely successful, possibly because the kitchen's healthy approach means that it doesn't have a deep-fryer.
What this place really needs is: better weather. It has a terraced area outside for barbecues but this summer's dismal drizzle means that it's barely been used.
Tried and tested: steak in red wine sauce; cabbage, carrots and broccoli; roast potatoes; selection of cheeses (all supplied by local farmers); hazelnut truffle; dried mango slices (from a snack rack in one of several small kitchens dotted around the premises); bottle of water.
