From the quality of its training to the challenges it offers and the friendships staff make, Mace has gained a reputation as a great place to work. One of the world’s largest and most diverse management and construction companies, its multi-award-winning projects have gained it a string of accolades, including the 2006 Management Today/Unisys overall service excellence award.
Employees get to work on some of the world’s biggest and most high-profile projects such as City Hall, the home of the Greater London Authority, the Jumeirah beach residences in Dubai and Terminal 5 at Heathrow. The firm was established in 1990 and now operates 10 sites around the UK staffed by 1,422 people. It recorded income of £270m in the past financial year, including pretax profits of £6.2m.
Ongoing, structured personal development and learning support means that as the London-based company grows, so do its people.
One graduate says: “I really enjoy working for Mace. It is a dynamic and forward-thinking organisation. You are pushed to achieve faster than you thought possible, but with constant support and guidance. It is an exciting place to work and you are working with the best in the industry from day one.”
Employees would recommend it as a place to work (an 83% positive result). They are proud to work here (82%) and excited about where the firm is going (81%), all top 30 scores. They believe they have a valuable contribution to make (81%), feel their job is secure and the experience they gain is good for their future (both 80%).
Awards and cash bonuses are on offer — staff can win monthly cash prizes for putting forward ideas. Perks include two duvet days, a wellness programme and a support helpline. Unpaid career breaks can be taken after three years.
People think their job is good for their own growth (80%), feel fully involved and have confidence in the leadership skills of senior management, who truly live the values of the organisation (a 78% score for these three points). Stephen Pycroft, the chief executive, has the backing of his staff, who have a great deal of faith in him (77%).
Various social events promote team spirit but, nonetheless, employees think they spend too much time at work, earning Mace just a 52% score. The good news is staff say their health is not suffering because of their job (76%) and stress isn’t a big problem (75%).
