2 for 1 tickets to Casablanca, this coming Monday

Doing difficult things well is all in a day’s work for staff at Data Connection. It is not unusual to see engineers in hallways debating some obscure algorithmic
puzzle and at lunchtime playing ultimate Frisbee or squash. Formed 26 years ago, this Enfield-based company believes in rewarding talent, determination and dedication and in valuing innovation, entrepreneurial spirit and a willingness to share ideas. This approach adds up to a thriving software development business and happy employees. A top 10-ranked company in each of the past four years, staff feel more secure in their jobs than those in all but one other organisation in the list, earning Data Connection an 89% positive result. Few would consider leaving (82%).
At just 6%, staff turnover is low at this company, which counts Microsoft, Cisco, BT and AT&T among its clients. It’s clear to see why when you look at the firm’s efforts to keep people happy, from allowing them to choose artwork to the flexible working options on offer. Employees can adjust their hours to suit childcare arrangements or personal circumstances and some have been offered home working.
Individual career and development plans ensure workers get the help and support they need and staff appreciate it. They rank their managers the highest for being good at listening to their views (83%) and being supportive (84%).
The firm’s commitment to supporting staff is demonstrated by the fact that mentors and managers set aside 50 days of their time for training a new employee in their first year. Everyone has a regular review during which they have 30 minutes (or longer) with their entire management line. This positive and encouraging atmosphere is viewed as being key to the personal development of each individual.
The firm has also introduced a series of management development seminars.
Communication lines are clear at Data Connection, where there is little confusion about who does what in the organisation (82%). Senior managers keep employees informed of the company’s direction and plans through regular meetings and listen to feedback and ideas.
Teamwork is the norm here and the working environment is studiously casual. People go out of their way to help each other (85%), have fun with colleagues (80%) and care a lot about each other (87%). Company outings serve to build on the strong esprit de corps. Data Connection takes its staff abroad once a year. Last year they celebrated the firm’s 25th birthday in Rome and this month they are heading off to ski in Courchevel. In addition, each department is allocated a morale budget for a weekend away, a trip to the theatre or just drinks down the pub.
The firm is owned by an employee benefit trust, which means workers share the wealth of the company. Data Connection provides subsidised membership of local gyms, tennis/
squash and golf clubs. More than half the staff earn more than £35,000 and, in addition to good salaries, employees benefit from childcare vouchers, private medical insurance, a non-contributory pension scheme, life assurance and a subsidised canteen. Understandably employees are happy with the pay and benefits they receive (78%, a top 10 score).
