Eamonn Casey joined the Marriott hotel chain’s graduate development programme in 2004 and hasn’t looked back since.
After being part of the management team behind the successful launch of the Marriott in London’s Kensington and spending time as a restaurant manager in the Durham Marriott, he settled into his current role as food and beverage manager at the Maida Vale hotel in London.
Marriott’s management style is very hands on and helps account for a 71% score for the My Manager factor in our survey, putting the company in the top 10. The firm wants staff to “manage by walking around” its 57 UK hotels. This encourages attention to detail and also makes employees feel that managers support them in their role (73%, a top 10 score). People feel their manager cares about them as an individual (73%) and about how satisfied they are in their job (69%).
Staff aren’t bored with the work they do (69%). The average time a general manager spends with Marriott is 17 years — understandably, people feel their job is secure (76%, a score bettered just five times elsewhere). They also believe that they can make a valuable contribution to the success of the company (73%).
Casey hosts regular meetings with other food and beverage managers to share ideas. Employees think he and his colleagues are doing a great job. A score of 72% shows that managers regularly express their appreciation to team members for doing a good job.
Managers are excellent role models and motivate employees to give their best every day (both 68%, and another two top 10 scores).
If anything is stopping an employee from working to their full potential, or if they need support or advice on any personal or work-related problems, they can call a confidential helpline that is open 24 hours a day. People don’t feel their health is suffering because of work (74%) and enjoy the perks of Marriott’s wellbeing policy.
All of the UK hotels have an on-site leisure club, which usually includes a gym, sauna, spa, swimming pool and treatment room. Staff can enjoy these facilities and receive a discount on beauty treatments. They clearly avail themselves of these perks. Stress levels are low, the positive score of 75% ranking the company fifth. Another top five score of 72% shows that employees aren’t under so much pressure at work that they can’t concentrate.
Colleagues really care for each other (75%) and they know that if they need a hand, their team-mates will go out of their way to help (74%). People find their teams fun to work with (81%) and feel a strong sense of family (70%).
Marriott recognises the importance of good working relationships and provides training specifically on teamwork. People are proud to work for the company (75%). A 76% score shows they feel fully involved at work and they say the business is run on strong principles (70%).
