Guy Lucas, 62, managing director of BACTEC International, a bomb disposal and landmine clearance company
“Once an area has been cleared of mines and explosive ordnance, including bombs, the land can be handed over to the local people. The satisfaction in doing this is immeasurable.
“Both ex-military and civilians are able to do this work, but, while some civilians are incredibly well motivated for humanitarian reasons, they are not always prepared for the rough environment of mine-contaminated areas such as Angola, Iraq and Afghanistan.
“You may be expected to live in a tent with no running water or electricity, and food may be scarce. Often you may be the only expat within miles, living in the local village and eating local food. It could be said that it is an unusual way of life, but it will certainly appeal to some people.
“I was trained in bomb disposal as an officer in the Corps of Royal Engineers, and while commanding the Royal Engineers Explosive Ordnance Disposal Squadron I set up the tri-service postconflict clearance of the Falklands and worked there, hands-on, for a three-month period.
“As an engineer I am curious to find out how things work and why they do not work. You need a technically inquisitive mind and a high degree of self-confidence to work in bomb disposal and landmine clearance. When you find an unexploded bomb or an item of ordnance, you must be able to dispose of it safely. This requires you to identify its hazards so that you are able to take the appropriate remedial action.
“This is where your training and experience really count.”
