Take a trip to New York and see the city from the air
Britannia Building Society, Leek, Staffordshire
Atmosphere: Natural light floods through huge glass windows of Britannia’s café and diners have a panoramic view of the Staffordshire moorlands. Meetings tend to be drowned out by the buzz of staff congregating at the hotplates, but the food on offer is very tempting.
Worth queuing for: The World Marché counter adds some theatre for staff as they pick out the ingredients and watch their pastas, omelettes, stirfries or curries being cooked in front of them. Minted lamb passanda with rice goes down well at £2.90. Staff queue for Friday’s freshly toasted paninis and there’s always room for a mini coffee mousse or zesty cheescake afterwards - their smallish size making it a guilt-free luxury. There is a well-stocked salad bar for the health-conscious, which includes feta cheese, olives and a rather pungent but tasty smoked mackerel. As Autumn winds sweep across the Moorlands, fresh home-made soup with moreish ingredients like broccoli and cheese or beef, and served with speciality bread is a great bodywarmer.
Straight in the bin: Bolognaise mince with a meat to grease ratio far beyond any self-respecting human’s limit.
What this place really needs is: A breakfast bar. Breakfast baps and freshly ground coffee with croissants are available across the site, but healthier alternatives would go down well.
Tried and tested: Asparagus and mushroom quiche with creamy potato gratin and salad, followed by homemade bread and butter pudding with custard, all for £3.20.

I have just finished my Britannia Staff restaurant lunch of pasta with chicken, chilli and coriander.
Aliceâs review was spot on - the fresh soups are usually my dish of the day but I was persuaded to try todayâs offering from the World Marché counter and it was delicious!
