What does a youth offending team officer do?
Stop young people from committing crime and help their parents, guardians or carers to look at the possible causes of their behaviour to stop them reoffending. The role involves working with mainly 10 to 18-year-olds at various stages of the criminal justice system and liaising with partner agencies such as social services, education, the police, health and probation.

What skills are needed?
Experience working with young people through the childcare or criminal justice system and a professional qualification relevant to one of the partner agencies such as a diploma in social work, probation studies, or youth and community studies, or a Certificate of Education. “The qualities we look for are a real interest in criminology and young people in terms of their welfare. Team officers need to be appropriate role models who can help young people to turn the corner,” says Horace Carter Allen, team manager of the Ealing Council Youth Offending Section.

What are the opportunities?
