Intelligence officers assess and investigate threats to national security. A typical day can involve liaising with translators, surveillance teams and other agencies. There is scope to develop your career and work in other areas such as personnel, finance, management or operational work. Tasks can range from implementing policies to dealing with agents.
What skills are needed?
A 2:1 degree can be substituted for 300 Ucas points and three years’ work experience or by five years’ permanent work experience. Potential employees need to demonstrate “an exceptional range of abilities” to get the job. In MI5’s own words: “An incisive intellect and finely balanced judgment are essential, as are outstanding verbal and written communication skills. You must be able to demonstrate the resilience and maturity to cope with setbacks, as well as the ability to work well in a team and establish a rapport with a wide range of people. Flexible, analytical and highly organised, you will have a superb eye for detail, and the perfect balance of sensitivity and confidence. Discretion and absolute integrity are also crucial qualities.”
How do I become one, then?
The Security Service recruits openly via its website, www.mi5careers.co.uk. MI5 recruits born or naturalised British citizens who have lived in the UK for the past ten years and candidates should have at least one British parent. The extensive vetting process can take from six to nine months and the Service asks that candidates discuss their application only with their partners and/or their immediate family.
