Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was founded in 1949. It is proud of its innovations in business education, which include the introduction of management science and the development of computer simulations to allow students to experience different roles. The school has produced six winners of the Nobel Prize for Economics, most recently Finn E. Kydland and Edward C. Prescott, who received the prize in 2004 for their work on economic policy and the driving forces behind business cycles.

Vital statistics.
More than half Tepper’s students have a GMAT score of 700-plus; only 1 per cent scored less than 600. Most students come from a science or engineering background and, on average, have a little more than four years’ work experience. During the first year, students study foundation units such as financial accounting, marketing management and business law and ethics. The second year is largely made up of elective courses; students can opt for specialist tracks such as general management, biotechnology and financial engineering. Tuition for 2007-08 costs $45,250 (£22,900) a year.

Tepper is ranked 33rd in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Which MBA? guide 2007, 43rd in ft.com’s global MBA rankings for 2007 and 16th in BusinessWeek’s list of the top 30 MBA programmes in the US.

International experience.
Students develop their own “global treks”, which incorporate classes at partner universities, business visits and social events with local executives, students and alumni. Recent or planned trips include China, India and South America. Alternatively, students can take an eight-week transitional economies course, which includes time in Germany, Czech Republic and Hungary.
