Eno has a pop at art colleges

AS a pioneer of intricate and some might say pretentious pop music, you might think that Brian Eno would have only good things to say about Britain’s art schools.

But The Times Higher Education Supplement (March 18) reports that the former member of Roxy Music, who attended Ipswich Art School, has called them “dim and tired” places where lecturers “babble meaningless jargon”.

In a lecture, “Is the Art School Dead?”, he told the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce that he would like to see exams scrapped in favour of “pop chart”-style Top Tens of student work and that he would like to see art schools modelled on the physics department at Imperial College London. This would have art school academics leading projects with students as apprentices and co-workers.
