Practices: Sevenoaks enthusiastic, dedicated and professional staff have been praised by the Audit Commission.

The council was awarded a total of 58 points out of a possible 60. It was the highest mark gained by any local authority under the new comprehensive performance assessment rankings.

Inspectors drew attention to the skilled and motivated employees who are being continually developed to meet the authority’s future needs. Staff morale is high, they added.

High morale may be due in part to the fun activities organised for employees: team-building events such as days go-karting or visiting theme parks. There is also a yearly members v officers cricket match.

New initiatives are communicated to staff through regular meetings and the chief executive visits all parts of the organisation and speaks to all.

The council has a comprehensive training programme, a dedicated training officer, opportunities for professional training and time off for studies.

Pay and benefits: Flexible working options available to most employees include job sharing, home working, compressed and reduced hours and flexi time.

Employees can also apply for unpaid career breaks and sabbaticals of up to 26 weeks. Free and subsidised sports facilities, an employee assistance programme and free parking are available to all employees. Also available in a flexible benefits package are a wellness programme, car allowances and loans.
