Margaret Wileman, Honorary Fellow and previously President and Principal of Hughes Hall, Cambridge, for 20 years until 1973, is celebrating her 99th birthday at two parties, today with neighbours, and tomorrow with the college, who told her: “99 years must be celebrated!”. Founded in 1865, Hughes Hall is the oldest graduate college in Cambridge and claims to be the friendliest and most welcoming one. Miss Wileman still takes a keen interest in college affairs and goes in for lunch every week during term time. One of the main listed buildings is named after her, as is the music society, where she attends all the concerts. She says: “Getting older is a bit like bicycling uphill. I take every day one at a time and my motto is, ‘We go when we’re invited!’, which may be next month, or next year. Who knows?” Margaret Wileman is 99 today. RGT

July 19 marks the 60th birthday of guitar wizard Brian May of Queen. He is also a scientist, an astronomer an author and an animal rights activist. His guitar hero Jeff Beck, turned 63 on June 24. Jeff Beck is arguably the world's greatest living guitarist in addition to being a hot rod mechanic, an avid gardener and a longstanding animal-loving vegetarian. I enjoy the London Times Birthdays' section.
