We've made some changes
to The Sunday Times
A. Mills, from Marylebone, asked for the etiquette when seized with a coughing fit in the middle of a concert.
Ever-youthful Euterpe, muse of the flute and harp concerto! I should not go to the concert if likely to have a coughing fit. But if the worst happens, smother the cough with handkerchiefs and coats until there is a break between movements. Then leave quietly. The principal thing is to disturb the music and those enjoying it as little as possible. PH
David Agress, Newport Beach, California: “Cough in time to the music, as you exit post haste.”
Charlie Higgins, Marylebone: “If you have a bad cough, you really should not be at the Wigmore Hall, for everybody's sake - especially the performers'.”
Lyndall Barbour, Warminster: “Leave your seat, if able to do so, straight away, while muffling cough with large handkerchief. Once you've let rip outside the auditorium, only re-enter it during an interval.”
