Winchester College honoured 28 Old Wykehamists who have seen active service in Iraq and Afghanistan by receiving them “Ad Portas” at the College on Wednesday. Three of the 28 were unable to be present as they are still deployed in these countries.
The Honorands, accompanied by the Warden of Winchester College, Sir Andrew Large, the headmaster, Dr Ralph Townsend, and Fellows of the College, entered War Cloister just before midday where pupils and dons were waiting to welcome them. All ranks from Lieutenant-General to Lieutenant were represented, together with two Lieutenant-Commanders, Royal Navy, who fly helicopters.
The Honorands were met by the Aulae Prae (Prefect of Hall), 18-year-old Felix Legge, who delivered a speech of welcome in Latin and English to which Lieutenant-General Robin Brims (ret’d), late Light Infantry, and Lieutenant Richard Watkins, Coldstream Guards, responded in Latin and English.
After the ceremony a wreath was laid by Major-General James Bucknall, late Coldstream Guards, in memory of all those Wykehamists who have given their lives in active service. The Last Post was sounded followed by Reveille.
The headmaster, Dr Ralph Townsend, said: “Whatever people’s views are on the politics of the current conflicts in which our troops are engaged, these men are brave, efficient and loyal, qualities deserving of the College’s recognition and respect.”
