A new book has appeared about the experiences of Far East Prisoners of War (FEPOWs), War Memories, A Medical Student in Malaya and Thailand. It was written by Gordon Smith, 88, one of the last two surviving officers of the 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, who fought in the disastrous Battle of Slim River on January 7, 1942.

A platoon commander during the battle, in which the Argylls were scattered by Japanese attacks, Smith was seriously wounded but evaded capture for three weeks. Eventually sent to work on the Burma-Thailand Railway, he was asked to put his prewar medical student experience to the test, helping overstretched medical officers and subsequently being responsible for making equipment for improving medical procedures in the difficult jungle conditions.

The book, priced £7.99, is to be launched at the 2nd International Researching FEPOW History Conference, which takes place from May 31 until June 1 at the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas, Staffordshire.
