A flower that it is particularly satisfying to find is now in bloom among long grass. This is grass vetchling, which generally has just a single, rich red flower, with the typical shape of a pea flower, growing on a little stalk out of the main stem. Otherwise it is like a grass plant itself, with narrow leaves, and can very easily be overlooked, especially as there is sometimes only a single specimen or two to be found in quite a large area of grass. Most often one comes across it by pure chance, when a gleam of red catches one’s eye among the pervasive green. It has become more uncommon in recent years. A vivid, sky-blue flower that is opening now in grassland, especially alongside damp ditches and on stream-sides, is meadow crane’s-bill. It has numerous five-petalled blossoms growing in clusters above deep-cut, dark green leaves, and its seedpods are like long-beaked birds’ heads. The popular garden geranium, Johnson’s Blue, is derived from it.
