Attend a special evening hosted by Mike Atherton

Hen’s eggs are universally common. Quails’ eggs and goose eggs are easily obtainable. Even ostrich eggs have been seen but no one I know has ever seen a turkey egg on sale. Why is this?
In the late 1940s my Granny sometimes took us to the Trocadero restaurant. Her lunch invariably consisted of one turkey egg, cut in half and covered with curry sauce (accompanied by a few Abdullah cigarettes). I’ve never seen one since.
Anthony Abrahams, Eynsham, Oxon
Having overheard this very discussion at a dinner the other night, I believe it is to do with profit. Income derived from meat production and sales outweighs the need to sell eggs when there are so many alternatives already available.

The answer is simple — they all get gobbled.

Why do so many English people find it so difficult to pronounce “ch” as in “loch” and “Ll” as in “Llandudno”?
The reason why native English speakers have problems pronouncing the “ll” and “ch” is that these phonemes do not exist in standard English. Speakers of any language often have problems pronouncing consonants or vowels which do not exist in their mother tongue. For example French has no “h”, German has no “w”, Spanish has no “sh”, Arabic has no “p”, Japanese has no “l”, Filipino has no “f”, and so on.
C. Taylor, Harrogate
For exactly the same reason that the French cannot pronounce “th” — lack of practice.
