Modern cars are designed to fold up, and absorb energy during a collision. An airbag is designed only to cushion flailing head and limbs. If it is used without a seatbelt, the ribcage may be stopped safely, but the heart may tear off at its root and the lungs, liver and spleen may rupture.

A seat-belt prevents the chest from surging forwards, while an unbelted body is able to keep travelling forward at great speed for a few seconds after the car has stopped. Contrast tomatoes hurled at 80mph against a hard surface and those that are restrained gently bumping the same surface.

Why are wedding bands usually worn behind the engagement ring on the finger?

An engagement ring with a precious stone has to be removed before immersion in hot water or detergent. Wearing rubber gloves over a stone would tear the gloves.
