I read your feature (December 17) advising how to beat “the depreciation effect”. I drive a 1994 Porsche 911 (993 series), one of the older cars recommended, and agree that it is an amazing vehicle.
I am constantly approached in filling stations and supermarket car parks by people with the later 911s (996 and 997 series) and Cayenne drivers telling me that they used to have a 993 and now wished they had it back.
I don’t agree with the point made about “pricey servicing” — apart from tyres (£480 plus Vat last time for an original equipment set) I spend about £250 a year on servicing and maintenance using an independent ex-Ferrari mechanic — less than my father spends keeping his four-year-old Fiesta on the road! I do 5,000 miles a year and pay £630 for fully comprehensive insurance on a classic policy that also allows some business use.
By the way, you don’t go for a drive in a 911 — you go for a roar.

TELEMATIC TROUBLES
If fellow motorists have considered going for Pay As You Drive by Norwich Union Direct, they should think again.
At the time, I thought it was a good idea. But I have had numerous problems since the telematic device was fitted, and at one point my car was rendered immobile by a flat battery. I had to arrange a transporter to take my car to an Alfa Romeo dealer who had to supply a new battery and rectify computer faults.
The advice of my dealer was to have the device removed. However, in the small print of the agreement I see this would cost me £95.
I am a pensioner living in a rural area with no adequate public transport, so I need a car.
