Engineered as a 4x4 with the grip of a coupe, the X6 is in a class of its own. It's designed to fill a gap in the market, says BMW, and it will be interesting to see whether the Bavarian manufacturer has got its research right. Engines start with a 3.0 290 bhp twin-turbodiesel engine up to a 4.8 V8 400bhp petrol. No prices have been confirmed but entry level models are expected to start at £45,000 making it pricier than the X5.

Nissan's GT-R won't officially be on sale in the UK until next year though right hand drive models are already arriving from Japan on the grey market. It's easy to see why: performance is comparable with a Porsche Turbo. The car will take you from stand still to 60mph in 3.4 seconds and costs £53,000.
