Turn key, log on, drive off. Car manufacturers are racing to be the first to
introduce in-car internet technology that will allow passengers to surf the
web and download their favourite videos and music while on the move.
The technology will also give motorists remote access to their vehicles,
allowing them to lock the doors and turn off lights over the internet from
the comfort of their home or office.
Chrysler, the American manufacturer, plans to introduce wi-fi technology in
British vehicles from the end of next year. Eventually, all its cars sold
here will be internet-enabled. BMW is likely to follow with its own in-car
web in 2010 and other manufacturers are considering following suit.
There are concerns, however, that the technology could lead to more accidents
as drivers ignore safety advice and check their e-mails while driving.
Robert Gifford, executive director of the parliamentary advisory committee on
transport safety, said: “Car manufacturers are creating a vehicle that seems
like an extension of your lounge — but that doesn’t normally travel at
70mph.”
Chrysler’s technology is the most advanced at the moment. A small device in
the boot connects to the internet using high-speed mobile phone networks,
then produces a wireless signal with a 100ft radius.
Sterling Pratz, chief executive of Autonet Mobile, the company which developed
the technology for Chrysler, said it was intended to be used only by
passengers.
“We want this to be the ultimate in-car entertainment system so people can
play games, watch a film, download music or just write an e-mail while
travelling. It’s logical. But this is marketed at the passenger, we don’t
promote surfing and driving at all,” he said.
There are so many plonkers driving around it is only a matter of time before one of them is surfing the net at 80. Stop it before it starts.
