This pack has been designed for use by teachers with 11-13 year old pupils (or key stage 3) intending to learn about major events in history, key leaders and political situations. It ties in with National Curriculum areas of study including History, English and ICT.

Engaging Minds WWII Competition:
Enclosed with this activity pack is an interactive wall chart featuring some
of the key events from World War II. There are seven spaces for pupils to
create their own headline as if they were reporters during the war. Once
completed you can send copies of your headlines to The Times for a chance to
win £250 worth of book vouchers to spend on additional learning resources.
Entries must be sent on a postcard or on a plain sheet of paper to: Engaging
Minds WWII Competition, The Times, 1 Virginia Street, London E98 1NN.
Our editors will judge entries and select a winner based on the originality and historical content of all seven headlines. All submissions must have the teacher’s name and class clearly indicated for prize notification, along with the school address. Wall charts should not be sent as entries.
Terms and conditions
1. Closing date for entries is last post on Tuesday, September 30, 2008.
2. Unless otherwise stated, the competition is open to all children resident
in the UK aged 13 or under and who attend any participating UK Primary
School, except children of employees of Times Newspapers Limited (“TNL”) and
it’s associated, affiliated or subsidiary companies or anyone connected with
this competition, including the third party promotional partners.
3. To be eligible for the prize, participating schools must adhere to the
following submission criteria. Entry is limited to one collated class entry
of seven headlines. Entries must be the original work of the pupils in the
class. On the submission, the teacher should clearly detail the class age
group, school, and contact details for the school. Entries to be sent to,
The Times, 1 Virginia Street, London E98 1NN marked Engaging Minds WWII
Secondary Competition. Schools should retain copies of entries if required,
as entries will not be returned.
4. The school and/or the teacher making the submission for any class shall be
responsible for ensuring pupils are able to participate in the competition
and accept the prize as set out and in accordance with these terms and
conditions. This shall include obtaining all necessary consents, parental or
otherwise, required by law or in accordance with any school policy for the
pupils to participate in the competition and, in the event of winning, for
them to accept the prize. In the event such consents are not obtained or the
school and/or pupils are unable to accept the prize, then TNL reserves the
right to re-judge the prize. The winning school is responsible for ensuring
all children who participate in the prize are adequately supervised
throughout the prize presentation.
5. By entering, all eligible entrants agree to abide by each and all of these
terms and conditions. TNL reserves the right, with or without cause, to
exclude entrants and withhold prizes for violating any of these terms and
conditions. TNL reserves the right to amend these terms and conditions. Any
amendments will be published on Times Online.
6. There is one prize. The winning class will be the class that has executed
the activity exceptionally well in every aspect and, in the opinion of the
judges, demonstrates the greatest creativity, understanding of the subject
and originality. The winning class will be notified by September 15, 2008
via their school. All reasonable endeavours will be made to contact the
winning class during this time. If a winner cannot be contacted or is not
available, TNL reserves the right to re-judge another winner from the
eligible entries received before the closing date.
7. The winning class will receive £250 worth of book vouchers to spend on
additional learning resources.
8. There is no cash or other alternative to the prize stated and the prize is
not transferable and no part or parts of the prize may be substituted for
other benefits, items or additions.
9. The winner may be required to submit valid identification before receiving
their prize.
10. The judges’ decision is final and binding on the entrants. No
correspondence will be entered into. Only winning entries will be notified.
11. Entrants will retain copyright in their submitted entries; however, by
entering, all entrants give TNL a worldwide royalty-free perpetual licence
to edit, publish and use each entry in any and all media (including print
and online) for publicity and news purposes. In particular, all entrants
license to TNL the right to print their entry on Times Online and in The
Times or The Sunday Times or any of their supplements.
12. TNL will not be liable for any failure of receipt of entries. Proof of
posting cannot be accepted as proof of delivery. TNL takes no responsibility
for any entries which are lost, delayed, illegible, damaged, incomplete or
otherwise invalid. Other than death or personal injury arising from the acts
or omissions of TNL, or their employees, the promoter will not be liable for
any loss or damage arising out of the winner’s or their classes’ enjoyment
of the prize.
13. The winning class and their school may be required to take part in
publicity. Subject to acquiring any necessary consents for the use of
photographs relating to children, by entering, any prize winners agree to
allow the free use of their names, photographs and general locations for
publicity and news purposes during this and future promotions by TNL or any
associated or subsidiary company of News International Limited.
14. Uses of personal data received by TNL in the course of the promotion are
subject to the privacy policy found on Times Online. Winners' names may be
published on Times Online.
15. Submission of an entry will be deemed acceptance of these terms and
conditions.
16. TNL reserves the right at any time to cancel, modify or supersede the
competition (including altering prizes) if, in their sole discretion, a
competition is not capable of being conducted as specified. TNL reserves the
right to substitute a prize of equal value in the event that circumstances
beyond their control make this unavoidable.
17. The promoter of this prize draw is Times Newspapers Limited (address
below).
18. For a list of winners, please send a stamped envelope to Times Newspapers
Limited Competitions Department, 1 Virginia Street, London E98 1RL, stating
for which competition you would like winners’ details.
19. Any relevant terms and conditions printed in The Times/The Sunday Times
newspaper or on Times Online form a part of these terms and conditions.
