Joanna Sugden: Case Study

Cecily Maude, 20, has just finished her first year studying English at University College London.
She works in a bar in Chelsea, West London, and says she could not manage if she didn't.
“I was desperate for a job when I started uni. I had spent my overdraft and had forgotten to apply for my student loan. So I was really poor. My dad pays for my accommodation already, so he said, ‘If you need more money, go and get a job.'”
She earns £5.52 an hour and works about 20 hours a week. The hours are quite flexible and do not affect her studies at all. “If I have an essay on, I just don't work shifts during the couple of days before it, so I'm not under too much pressure. When you're a student it's the only time of your life when people give you free money so you go out and spend it all.
“Having a job means you have more money and less time to spend it.”
A student loan in London is not enough to cover the cost of living, she says. “I will definitely carry on working next year and it will make a big difference since I will have to pay my own bills and buy my own food.
“I need to be able to pay to do the things I want to do and if I didn't have a job I wouldn't have enough money to be able to do all that.
“I really wonder how people manage without working at uni.
“It's just a bar job, it's not 9-5 every day. It's just a means to an end.”

I get a 'reduced' loan (which is lower than the 'minimum' loan - someone didn't have a grasp on semantics) because I'm on an NHS funded course. This means my loan is £2000 a year and my rent is £3000 a year. Somewhere the figures don't add up... And yes, I have a job too.
Ali, Leicester,
I graduated in 2003 - my loan was not enough to cover my fees & accomodation, let alone food & books, & I did engineering - a full time course. I worked, but had to subsidise myself with credit & overdrafts - very stressful 4 years!! People don't realise the pressure that hangs over some students!
Gem, Notts,
I was a mature student in London when you could still get a grant, but I had to have a job as well as we were struggling on one salary. When I asked for an extra day to submit an essay I was told to give up work. I had to explain it wasn't that easy with a mortgage. Academics don't understand.
Linda, Fife,
Her accommodation is paid for her by her father, and she still thinks the loan would be too little to live on? Amazing. And she 'forgot' to apply for it anyway - clearly she didn't need it very badly then. Sounds like a case of little-spoilt-girl to me.
Sarah, London, UK
I worked 2 different jobs to get myself through University and it never stop me from getting from ahieving an honour. If you want something bad enough in life you will do all that it takes to get it [legally of course:)]. Perhaps, you will now appreciate the value of education.
d, london, uk
Ray, Davao, Philippines: If that's the case, should we be asking five-year-olds in school to start earning a living? School in the UK used to be about learning and being a better person. Over the last fifty years it has become more about educating, i.e. churning out people who can do different jobs.
Abdul Majeed, Bradford, West Yorkshire, UK
If a student is so thick and financially incompetent they forget to apply for a loan they shouldn't be at university in the first place.
Michael, birmingham,
I have recently finished university in Bristol and worked part time during term and full time during holidays! not only do bar jobs help you meet people in a new city but set you up for work post uni, People who dont work find it very hard to do 40 hours a week!
jay collett, bristol, england
I got a grant for my law degree and for my bar exams, but those were happier times. onwhat i subsequently earned I would never have paid off a loan had I done it these days
peter c, devizes, wessex
If you really wanted to live on the loan and advance fees you could, if you want a higher standard of living then go work, grades are never affected, people only blame working for low grades when they are too lazy to study. (2:1) MSc (Merit), Psych - 39 hours work a week, 4 years full time study.
nick bacon, london,
No, not Economics. If she did that she would print money in her basement then when found out demand the Government pay back those she owed.
Roger Thornhill, London, UK
Why are people astonished that they need money to survive. I went to University in the 80s and worked all the way through the three year course. 2 bar jobs plus a 16 hour stint in a petrol station on a sunday. Its hard work, get used to it.
Marcus Saw, horndon on the hill, uk
Maybe you should change your course to Economics? That way you could become a little more organized with money.
But what's wrong with working anyway, surely the reason for going to uni is to get a job? Working now will give you very good experience for the future.
