This is a list of the 2008 GCSE results of schools who last year failed to get above the Government's "floor target" of 30 per cent of pupils getting five good GCSEs including English and maths.
Schools who did not make this target were designated "National Challenge" schools in June and faced the possibility of closure if they did not improve. This year 243 of them submitted their GCSE results to The Times.
One hundred and eleven of the schools in our table managed to break through the 30 per cent barrier this year to lift themselves out of danger, they are marked in bold.
(Results will be subject to minor changes when the official figures are released in November)

There are two problems with these tables: firstly because schools can 'shop around' for the easiest examination boards (Awarding Bodies) we are not compering like with like. Secondly, for more than a decade, local authorities have merged failing schools into new schools which still fail.
