A NETWORK of “finishing schools” could be created across Britain to provide recession-hit university graduates with a crash course on workplace etiquette and fashion faux pas, under plans being considered by the government.
The schools would teach students everything from how to finesse body language in the boardroom, to what outfit to pick for an interview.
Having completed a successful pilot in London earlier this year, the Young Foundation — a think tank whose founder, Michael Young, created the Open University — is in talks with the Department for Work and Pensions and the Department for Innovation Universities and Skills (DIUS) over funding for a national roll-out of the scheme.
“Many people leaving university this summer are going to be entering a very barren jobs market,” said Rushanara Ali, associate director of the Young Foundation.
“Our aim is to ensure graduates hit the ground running by giving them the knowledge they need to impress potential employers.”
The project — called Fastlaners — is supported by JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Canary Wharf Group, and the civil service. Recruitment experts from City firms have agreed to brief graduates on the dos and don’ts of business culture.
Over 90% of the students who completed the pilot course were subsequently given jobs or placements.
The intensive course lasts two weeks and costs £1,000 per student, though the foundation hopes the fee will be largely subsidised by the government and private sponsors. The centre aims to establish finishing schools in several cities around the UK by the end of the summer.
A DIUS spokesperson said: “Higher education minister David Lammy has had discussions with the Young Foundation about this initiative. He welcomes it as a positive way to help graduates get into employment and start successful careers.”
