- If you discover that your grades are slightly below those requested in the conditional offer, ring the admissions tutor at once to see if the university will give you a place anyway.
- If this does not work and you do not want to do resits or to take a gap year, make a list of the courses and universities you like.
- Use The Times Good University Guide, the websites listed or the Ucas website. If you have not had an offer of a place, or if your offer has been withdrawn, you will receive your clearing passport.
- Check the vacancies list on Ucas.com first, or ring 0870 1122211.
- When you have a shortlist of vacancies, make a list of reasons why the course interests you and what you can bring to the university.
- Ring the universities yourself but do not take the first place that you are offered unless it is absolutely right.
- When you are happy with a course, send, or better still, take your clearing passport to the university.

one year out may seem alot
but resit that module, you'll be on AAB, and reapply to where you really want to go.if you do your module in january you can do work experience until september next year and you'll have an advantage over candidates as you will show you have more independance, dont be so ridiculous.
Lucie, London,
Omg! Get over it. Anyone would KILL to have those grades. Don't be so rigid or you will never get anywhere. Learn to compromise. I was like you. But I realised its not the end. As long as you get a degree, are enjoying the course YOU chose to do and get where you want, who cares! I would rather have a degree from the "worst" uni than none at all. It sounds like you have to much pressure to live up to your own and other people's pressures. Are you sure you REALLY wanted to do that course or go to that uni?
Ashley, Bristol,
Yes i feel your pain Melissa. Too be quite honest, having a face like yours really wont help things will it? Sort it out.

Clearing is all well and good for some people, but by missing out on my second A grade by six marks, I'm being made to sell myself short at some of the worse universities, despite initially being deemed fit for uni's in the top 20.
I now feel like there is little point in continuing with further education as despite good grades, I am being forced to choose uni's that won't challenge me mentally. I've never felt so stupid in my whole life, yet ironically there are people with grades much lower than mine who still have the security of a place at a uni which is suited to their level. I'm probably bitter, but I think this system has its flaws. No way should someone who got an ABB (SIX MARKS from an AAB-ARGH!) be made to go to a uni with the equivalent of a DCD minimum grade. I could reapply next year, but I doubt I'd be considered by anyone as I couldn't do it the first time round. I'm 18 years old, yet I feel my life is over before it's begun.
