Included in our league table for the first time, UCF earns its place on account of its much-changed profile since we first published in 1998. No longer is it just a college of art (albeit a very good one). Working with the University of Exeter, it is a partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC) initiative, bringing higher education to one of the few counties in England that still lacked access to an institution to call its own.

The fruits of CUC can be seen on the Tremough campus, in Penryn, jointly run by UCF and Exeter University. More than £70m has been spent and £35m more of work comes on stream this autumn – 300 extra study bedrooms will also add significantly to accommodation.

Concentrating on art, design and media courses, UCF provides complementary academic coverage to its university partner at Tremough. Just down the road, the Woodlane campus is the focus of student life in Falmouth itself.

It houses courses in fine art, illustration, journalism, public relations, graphic design, fashion and performance sportswear design, and provides creative advertising and 20th-century art and design facilities. Courses launched this month include marine and natural history photography, digital animation and press photography. UCF trades on its coastal location and the proximity of everything that makes Cornwall a popular holiday destination.

Its high ranking (just below the best modern universities) is due in part to an exceptionally low dropout rate, well below funding council expectations. It awards a staggering number of high-class degrees, with more than four in five students gaining a first or (mostly) a 2:1.

The presence of such creative forces within UCF has helped make the town a regional hub for the arts. Falmouth is awash with literary, music and arts festivals year-round.
