Robert Gordon University issued the ultimatum after a prostitute was found wandering in all-male student accommodation that overlooks the city’s notorious harbour area.
The university confirmed that a letter was issued to students by the accommodation manager after a security breach in May at the Mearns Complex and complaints from other residents.
The letter was intended to remind students of hall rules and regulations, which stated that any guests must be signed in and must leave the premises before 11pm, a spokesman said.
“A prostitute was found trying to leave the building through an alarmed fire exit. She said that she was doing some business with a guy upstairs,” the letter stated.
“We have had a number of complaints about this issue from residents who were not willing to identify the culprits. Apart from the obvious dangers to your own health of having sex with prostitutes, many girls working the streets are intravenous drug users. We are also concerned that prostitutes are being allowed to wander through the halls of residence and thus increasing the opportunity of theft.
“You are reminded that prostitutes are not welcome in the halls of residence and in addition to this all bona fide guests must leave the premises before 11pm. If you cannot live by these conditions you would be better finding alternative accommodation.”
The letter concludes: “Any discovered breaches of the above will result in you being immediately asked to leave the premises.”
Sanjeev Sheoran, 25, a masters student at the complex, said that prostitutes were active in the area. “The prostitutes do come here as they work just around the corner, I have seen all these things going on,” he said.
“You see them when you are walking home at night. I have heard the prostitutes have stolen mobile phones. I am not involved in this type of thing so I do not need one of these letters and I cannot be judgmental. But I feel this warning is enough for others.”
A spokesman for Robert Gordon University said: “We were made aware of an isolated incident involving the presence of a prostitute at the Mearns complex. The accommodation manager acted immediately and informed all residents by letter of the accommodation service rules. Since then, no further issues have arisen.”
