Bangor is one of three former members of the University of Wales that went independent from September 1. Although Bangor, in common with Aberystwyth and Swansea, will continue to award University of Wales degrees, the move gives it greater academic freedom to expand and develop. For starters, 50 extra academics have been appointed as part of a £10m investment programme to boost the university’s international standard and strengthen the quality of undergraduate teaching.
Bangor has introduced a range of bursaries to help offset the introduction of tuition fees in Wales. Means-tested awards are worth £1,000 if your family income is below £17,910, half that if it is between £17,910 and £38,330. An unlimited number of subject bursaries are worth £500 per year, though the list of applicable courses has yet to be finalised for 2008 entry. Chemistry, computer science, electronic engineering, modern languages and law students will benefit this year. Scholarship provision is also generous for those who excel academically, with awards typically of £500 per year or one-off payments of £2,500 or £3,000. Wales-domiciled students get a non-means-tested grant of £1,845.
The university boasts a glorious setting close to the mountains of Snowdonia as well as the beaches of Anglesey and north Wales. To help protect that setting, the recently completed environmental sciences centre has photovoltaic panels to generate electricity from solar power, ground-source heat pumps, and a rainwater recovery system.
A raft of bachelors’ degrees was introduced this year, including BAs in business studies, marketing and electronics. Degrees starting in 2008 include a BSc in zoology with animal behaviour and one in cancer biology.
Student accommodation is also benefiting from investment; a £35m development is under way that will provide 650 extra rooms.

Open days October 20.
