Bath has consistently enjoyed a high ranking in our guide, and breaks back into our elite top 10 this year. It is noted mostly for its science, engineering and sports provision, but has a sizeable number of students (1,900 out of 8,100) in its faculty of humanities and social sciences. Its formidable reputation for teaching and research in science and engineering, in particular, means Bath can command the highest grades from applicants, who outstrip the number of places available by more than seven to one on average, where others struggle to fill them. A 14% jump in applications this year will intensify competition.
A formidable research record feeds through into teaching excellence, too, and the university enjoys a great reputation among Britain’s leading head teachers who rank it fourth in the UK this year in our exclusive survey.
The outstanding sports facilities are uniquely free of charge and enjoy some of the highest usage rates in the UK. Thirty members of TeamBath competed at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and the university has been awarded an extra 98 sports-related places to strengthen its athlete population ahead of the 2012 Games.
Bursary provision is generous. The maximum payment of £1,500 to those on a full grant is one of the UK’s highest and there are 40 merit-based scholarships worth £1,000 awarded to entrants to chemistry, chemical engineering, modern languages and European studies largely on the basis of entry grades.
The university lies just outside the historic city of Bath, the UK’s only city to be listed as a world heritage site. A £50m spend over the next three years will add more than 350 student rooms, more teaching and learning space, social facilities and a new arts centre.
