Sunshine and studying are an agreeable combination and Bournemouth offers students both in spades. The university is resolutely vocational in all it does and it is no surprise, therefore, that Bournemouth has both a high graduate employment rate and good starting salaries that rank its graduates in the top quarter of institutions nationally, with an average starting salary of just over £19,000.
Foundation degrees (Fds) – two-year programmes that can be topped up to a full honours degree – were made for institutions such as Bournemouth, which now has a separate Fds prospectus because there are so many of them. Planned additions for 2008 include creative music production, counselling, aboriculture, garden design and professional culinary arts. Many Fds are delivered at a string of partner colleges across the southwest. All recruits gaining AAA at A-level (or equivalent) will be eligible for a £1,000 scholarship in their first year. About 150 were awarded last year.
Bournemouth is hoping for improved research ratings next year, and appointments have been made with the 2008 assessments in mind.
Students following forensic and media programmes have access to some of the finest facilities in the UK. Last December saw the completion of Rose Cottage, a scenes-of-crime house furnished like a domestic residence, for the teaching of forensic protocols.
Sports facilities are good, with watersports on the doorstep. Coupled with a lively nightlife, it makes a compelling argument for a university that seeks students who know what they want to be and who want a course that will give them the practical skills to get there.

Open days October 20; November 17.
