Bradford’s origins as a technical college are still evident today, although opening quotes in its 2008 prospectus from a law student and another studying creative writing and identity emphasise that it is now a multifaculty institution. Science and engineering, which did not enjoy the best of ratings for teaching excellence a decade ago, vie with health studies and management as core activities now.
New degrees in live arts and performance and economics combined with either social policy, sociology or psychology (from next September) indicate Bradford’s willingness to mix the vocational with the academic. So does its peace studies department, the largest in the world devoted to the study of peace and conflict. Places in the department are at a premium, a typical offer requiring BBC at A-level.
The 90% of students from its courses who gained employment or moved into further study within six months of graduation is one of the lower proportions, and compares with, for example, the 100% for design and electronics and telecommunications graduates.
Students from families with residual annual income under £38,330 have been eligible for bursary support from the university since last year. The Bradford bursary starts at £500 and rises £200 a year to a maximum of £900 for final year students. There are also a range of academic scholarships.
Bursaries, scholarships and grants go a long way in Bradford. Accommodation is cheap and plentiful, the local curry inexpensive and wonderful. Students are drawn from 110 countries and those from abroad make up more than one in five of the student population.
