Brunel offers students London without many of the downsides. Now condensed onto one central campus in Uxbridge, the university is nearing the end of a £250m refit which has seen the 1960s architecture (made famous by The Clockwork Orange – Brunel’s most oft-quoted claim to fame) augmented by landmark modern buildings and student accommodation.
More than 1,400 en-suite student rooms have been built, with another 1,400 due next September. And about one-third of students should benefit next year from the heavily revised bursary and scholarship scheme. All of which ought to feed through, in time, to lift Brunel from its present bottom 20 score for student satisfaction.
Brunel has much more going for it than just excellence in engineering and science. There is a great arts scene on campus, while the university offers high-quality drama, music, English and film and television courses. It also excels at sport, where it boasts a fine reputation in and out of the classroom.
Heptathlete Kelly Sotherton is just the latest success story to have honed her skills here. As part of Brunel’s refurbishment, a £14m sports complex now offers world-class facilities.
This year degrees in sport youth work, geography and sports sciences add to the range offered. Musical composition, contemporary music and performance, drama and digital performance and sonic arts are also added, emphasising the diversity of subjects studied here. There has been heavy investment in research. Of note is ground-breaking research conducted in Brunel’s cancer genetics and pharmacogenomics institute.
Brunel has links to more than 7,000 companies and last year sandwich students earned about £7.5m from their placements. Many meet their future employers in this manner.
