A dropout rate of about half the expected level speaks volumes about this university. Students at this progressive modern institution – now ranked second in its sector – enjoy their courses and love the south coast locations in Brighton and Eastbourne even more. Eastbourne has shed its God’s waiting room image while Brighton is home to England’s largest arts festival and revels in its avant-garde “alternative” reputation.
Brighton remains the only modern (post-1992) university to be named Sunday Times University of the Year. It is one of just two modern universities to have a medical school, run in conjunction with near-neighbour Sussex. Established in 2003, it had more than 2,250 applications for just 133 places last year, more than 17 candidates per berth making a place here one of the most coveted in the UK.
Among the new degrees offered are BAs in fashion and dress history, moving image, and photography and moving image, building on Brighton’s reputation in art and design. Two centres of excellence in teaching and learning in art and design will cement Brighton’s position. The first provides resources for ways of learning through the use of mobile technologies such as mobile phones and iPods. The other is located alongside new design studios and includes a visualisation laboratory.
Despite its prosperous location, more than a quarter of the intake is drawn from lower social class backgrounds and it is seeking to widen its appeal further. It is the lead partner in the University Centre Hastings, bringing university courses to one of the few parts of the southeast poorly served for higher education. There were already close to six applications per place, and this year saw a near 15% jump in demand to increase the competition still further.

Open days October 6 (Eastbourne); October 13 (Moulsecoomb); October 20 (Falmer).
