University Centre Folkestone, Canterbury Christ Church’s newest campus developed in collaboration with the University of Greenwich, opened this month. It offers courses in performing and visual arts, entrepreneurship and early childhood studies. It is the fourth Kentish outpost of the university, which has bases in Chatham and Broadstairs as well as the eponymous hub.
From next year a sports centre will boost provision and, in Canterbury city centre, Augustine House, a £30m flagship building set to open in 2009, will house a library, learning resource centre and student support facilities.
The university started life as a church teacher training college in 1962, and education students still account for a significant tranche of its undergraduate population. Scholarships of £200 go to 400 full-time PGCE (postgraduate certificate in education) students, with 30 £100 awards for part-timers. At £46,048, the household income cut-off point for bursary qualification is higher than most other universities. The high number of teacher graduates contributes to the second lowest rate of graduate unemployment, at just 1.8%.

Open days October 6 (Canterbury), October 23 (Broadstairs).
