Cardiff is a popular student destination, with close to 40,000 applications to this university each year (and plenty more to the city’s other university). And it’s not hard to see why. Cardiff University lies at the heart of a buzzing capital city that has become a mecca for the young. The university, too, has many of the latest facilities. Students in the school of optometry and vision sciences – one of the 21 subjects rated excellent for teaching – move into a £20m building this month. This, in turn, will create room for the Welsh School of Pharmacy to expand.
Medical and health-related subjects form a big part of the academic programme at Cardiff. One of the 20 Russell Group of research-led universities, Cardiff earned close to £100m last year from research.
With top-up fees introduced in Wales this month, Cardiff has come up with a bursary scheme that pays out £300 to £1,000 a year to students whose parents’ residual income totals less than £38,326. Wales-domiciled students get a £1,845 annual fee remission grant. Scholarships worth £3,000 over three years (paid out in £1,500 and then two £750 or three £500 instalments over the remaining years of a course) are open to the 100 best qualified entrants across 11 subjects. Competition for these scholarships is stiff, with the average A/AS-level entry points hitting 383 last year.
The students’ union is active and accommodation plentiful, with rents from £55 a week. The quality of student life and the university’s strong academic profile have contributed to Cardiff’s good showing in all of the first three national student surveys.
