UCE Birmingham is a modern university with a long history. Features such as the Birmingham Conservatoire (one of Britain’s foremost music schools) and the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (one of Britain’s oldest and most prestigious art schools) give the feel of an “old” university.

The portfolio of courses, however, leaves nobody in any doubt that UCE Birmingham is a thoroughly modern institution. New courses planned in fashion accessories, jewellery design for industry, interior products, motorsports technology and media for mobile devices give a flavour of the accent on applied learning.

The Birmingham School of Acting became part of the Conservatoire last year, allowing for greater collaboration between the two, including community theatre and dance projects, and the Conservatoire’s main performance venue, the Adrian Boult Hall, has just seen a £700,000 refurbishment.

Students are spread across nine campuses throughout Birmingham, half of them on the main site at Perry Barr, three miles from the city centre. There is university accommodation for all first-years who apply for it in time and last year a bursary scheme offered just over £500 a year to all students in receipt of a state maintenance grant.
