Chichester is one of the smallest universities in the UK – and one of the most distinctive. With fewer than 3,000 full-time undergraduates, split between campuses in Chichester and Bognor Regis, this is about as far removed from the inner-city redbrick university experience as you can get.
Chichester gained university status as recently as 2005, but was successful in our league table long before that. The advent of the national student survey has only cemented its position with its excellent showing – 11th overall this year – demonstrating not just student satisfaction with the quality of teaching, but also a general contentment with life on the sunny south coast.
Courses are offered across a tight range of subjects; sport, teacher training, performing arts, business and public services and administration are to the fore. Programmes for this year include a BSc in sport and exercise psychology and a certificate in golf coaching. In 2008, new foundation degrees in health promotion and personal training, community sports coaching and musical theatre will add even greater depth in areas of recognised excellence.
The attractive campuses should see improvements by next September, including a new students’ union bar on the Bognor Regis campus and music practice rooms at Chichester, further to the dance and performing arts facilities that opened in 2006.
Chichester, with its lively arts scene, is home to the bigger of the two campuses and houses the students’ union building which incorporates a 650-capacity bar-cum-nightclub. Most sports, media, adventure education and PE teacher trainees, theology and humanities students are based here.
The Bognor Regis campus is smaller and houses business students and primary and secondary PGCE teacher trainees.

Open days September 29; October 25; November 8 (mature); November 24.
