City University is a mirror image of its location, being both business-focused and multicultural. With close to 160 nationalities represented, City has forged a worldwide appeal, born of its location on the fringes of the Square Mile and its portfolio of courses dominated by business, management and health programmes.
City bills itself as the university for business and the professions. Many degrees carry professional accreditation, excusing graduates further rounds of exams. And while City has not gone down the vocational route typified by hairdressing and golf-course management degrees, there is a specific job in mind at the end of many courses. This is reflected in the graduate unemployment rate, which is low, and the average starting salary of graduates which, at £23,200, is among the 10 highest.
The university has a distinctive balance. There are more part-time students than full-time; a third of the full-time student body are postgraduates, giving the institution a more scholarly air; and about a third of students are from overseas, mostly from outside Europe. They are spread across the main Northampton Square campus, the Cass Business School (a £20m smoked glass affair 10 minutes away) and the St Bartholomew School of Nursing and Midwifery.
Bursary provision has been limited to those on full state maintenance grants and just 16% of new students qualified last year for the £1,000 City award. There are scholarships worth up to £2,000 a year in business, law and engineering.
The students’ union works hard to provide a social focus for City’s intake, but struggles to compete with the attractions of London. It doesn’t help that its main bar is not always open at weekends or that people study at three sites and live all over London.
