The city and university of Coventry have been transformed in the past decade. The university now boasts some fine modern facilities, the most recent of which is a £5m student centre opened last year. The Ellen Terry building has also been refurbished for the large numbers of performing arts students.
Coventry, which has often been at the cutting edge in terms of course development (for example, its long-standing disaster management degree programmes) is still innovating. A degree in global security is planned for next year, while this month sees the first virtual engineering student intake. A planned BSc in climate change will be another UK first.
The university is keen to attract the brightest and its scholarship scheme is pitched accordingly. Those achieving 300 Ucas points (BBB at A-level, 31 points at IB or vocational qualification equivalent) qualify for a generous £2,000 a year scheme. Applications are up again, a 6% rise reflecting the popularity of this city-centre university. Beyond the 12 subjects rated excellent for teaching quality – with a growing number of excellent assessments for healthcare subjects – Coventry is one of a handful of universities to gain three centres of excellence in teaching and learning. These cover health and social care, maths and statistics and art and design, the latter building on its international reputation in transport and product design.
Coventry has automotive projects with Ferrari, Mazda and Land Rover, and there are extensive links to the British car industry. The university lies at the heart of the city, extending out from the ruins of the cathedral.

Open days October 13, 24 and 27.
