There can be few universities with a more modern perspective than Derby. High levels of investment in new facilities combine with forward thinking methods of study to make this a thoroughly progressive institution. This November, Sir Richard Branson will officially open Markeaton Street, a new £21m building in the west of Derby for the teaching of arts, design and technology. The new site is close to the main campus in Kedleston Road and is intended to further entrench a university quarter for the city. Its modern facilities include performance spaces with retractable seating and a central glazed avenue with exhibition space linking the different study areas.
It was only this year that Derby opened its last huge development. The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall inaugurated the launch of the University of Derby Buxton. More than 1,000 students are now based in what was the old Royal Devonshire hospital. It has undergone a £23m restoration and students are now housed in a structure that boasts a dome larger than St Paul’s in London.
The university’s advanced provision of e-learning and modular study options have meant it is one of just eight selected by Hefce (Higher Education Funding Council for England) to engage in a project to evaluate flexible learning opportunities in the UK. Such ventures are typical of Derby’s socially inclusive approach.
Means-tested bursaries are on a sliding scale based on the level of maintenance grant received by the student. However, local applicants can boost their level of financial help thanks to the university’s comprehensive range of awards for those from the surrounding areas. Those from certain local postcodes qualify for £300; students who have studied at local colleges or taken access courses at the university get £400 via the compact bursary scheme; Buxton bursaries award £400 to students studying at the Buxton site.

Open days October 13 and 26; November 10 and 30 (Derby); October 6; November 3; December 8 (Buxton).
