Dundee is what higher education should be about: high-quality teaching delivered by academics at the cutting edge of their subjects in modern attractive surroundings. Forty years on from its establishment as a university, Dundee has forged an international reputation in medicine and the life sciences. Researchers are constantly pushing back the frontiers of knowledge, particularly in the areas of cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular research. Sir Alfred Cuschieri pioneered keyhole surgery here, while more recently Professor Irwin McLean has discovered the gene that causes skin disorders such as eczema.
The university has a fine teaching record, with more than two-thirds of all subjects rated excellent. Many of these are housed in new facilities. Dundee is just coming to the end of a £200m programme that has seen both refurbishments and new buildings. Accommodation is single-study bedrooms with en-suite facilities, after a £40m spend to create the Dundee student village. An extended sports centre was completed last month. All this and a city with more sunshine and more students per head of population than anywhere else in Scotland.
After St Andrews, Edinburgh and Glasgow, Dundee has the fourth largest intake of students from England, with about one in six freshers winning their place with A-levels, rather than Highers. It also works hard to widen participation; an annual 10-week access summer school has helped 1,000 students gain admission over the past 15 years who might otherwise have missed out.

Open days September 26, except architecture, design, fine art, media arts and imaging (October 29, 30 and 31) and nursing and midwifery (October 10, Fife) and (October 17, Tayside).
