For a university that until 2002 lacked a medical school, UEA is very quickly making a name for itself in healthcare. About one-third of all students are now enrolled on health-related courses and an extension to the health faculty is due to open this month.
UEA’s motto Do Different is enacted in most of what it does. It looks and feels different to most institutions of its size and age. A baby-boomer university dating from 1963, it has just over 10,000 full-time students at undergraduate and postgraduate level. About one-third live in, housed in some of the most avant-garde architecture in Britain. Where most 1960s universities are busy demolishing the often brutalist architecture that defined them, UEA glories in the legacy of Sir Denys Lasdun, Lord (Norman) Foster and Rick Mather.
Having climbed to its highest position in our table (16th) two years ago, UEA lies today on the fringe of the top 20. Next year’s research ratings could provide it with a boost, given its enhanced medical profile since the 2001 assessments. UEA is already among the elite universities, scoring more than 70% in our analysis of the last research ratings.
Students like the UEA experience, ranking the university inside the top 10 nationally for each of the first three national student surveys with this year’s satisfaction score clearing 80% for the first time. The university enjoys a great reputation for live music, attracting many big-name bands and the city of Norwich itself is awash with pubs and history.
Sports facilities are excellent thanks to the £17.5m Sportspark, which includes a 50m Olympic-size pool. And in the Sainsbury Centre for the Visual Arts, UEA has one of the finest cultural resources of any university in the world.
About one in five students are mature returners to education (a high proportion for an older university), one in eight comes from abroad and an extensive mentoring programme in schools and residential and nonresidential summer schools should help diversify the UEA intake further.
