UEL is a model modern university. It is big on widening participation – just a quarter of the intake holds A-levels as a passport to a place. Half the students are mature, returners to the education system after a period of work or raising a family. UEL recruits heavily from its local area, where participation in higher education has been traditionally very low, and also from the lower social classes and ethnic minorities.
UEL’s focus is on applied learning; all courses are vocational, often designed with specific jobs in mind.
A business school, library and Knowledge Dock (which works with more than 1,000 companies and entrepreneurs to provide facilities, training and consultancies) was recently opened by the Queen. It is the latest addition to the futuristic flagship Docklands campus. A student village with waterfront accommodation for 800 opened in the spring, and a students’ union building with shops and a cafe/bar should be ready for the new term.
A second campus, in nearby Stratford, might be considered the poor relation to the striking Docklands site, were it not for the London 2012 Olympics venue on its doorstep. Alive to the huge potential offered by the awarding of the Games to London, UEL is launching new degrees in management of international tourism, music-media and events.
Stratford has recently seen a centre for physiotherapy, podiatry and sports science completed – the first two specialities are areas in which teaching has been rated excellent. With work started on an education building and computer centre, and plans for a library and more student residences, it will be looking its best by 2012.
The 200 students with the best qualifications on entry get a £1,000 one-off achievement scholarship payment. An innovative “bursary” scheme sees most students qualify for £500 in vouchers in their second semester.

Open days October 17.
