The fourth oldest university in the UK, Glasgow is our Scottish University of the Year. Steeped in history, it has more listed buildings than any other university (100plus) acquired over more than 550 years; it has illustrious alumni including Adam Smith and Lord Kelvin – and a profile good enough to rank it in the top 100 universities worldwide. Students flock here from all over the UK and the wider world. One in five comes from outside Scotland – fewer than at Edinburgh and St Andrews but testimony to its popularity and that of the city as a student destination.
Students are drawn by Glasgow’s outstanding academic reputation, and the university is constantly developing its research. It is already one of the top 10 earners of research contract income in the UK. The old Loch Lomond field station site will house a new centre for environmental research, the Scottish Centre for Ecology and the Natural Environment (Scene), forming part of what Glasgow claims to be the largest grouping of life scientists in Europe.
Wider investment in facilities has been especially heavy with more than £150m spent in the past five years.
Glasgow graduates are among the best paid in the UK, earning on average just over £21,000 in their first job. More than two-thirds of them graduate with at least a 2:1 from Glasgow’s broad range of traditional subjects. Vocational education here does not extend much beyond medicine and teacher training.
Students are a sporty lot; the 62% participation rate in university sport is one of the highest in the UK.
With two students’ unions (another quirk born of a long history), and the trendy west end location of many of its buildings, Glasgow justifies its reputation for having the best social life of any Scottish institution.
