A warm northern welcome awaits newcomers to Huddersfield; both the town and its higher education institution pride themselves on their friendliness. The university has scored consistently well in the national student satisfaction survey, first introduced three years ago, with history and performing arts students recording some of the highest ratings in the UK.
Degrees are strongly vocational, and students get a real taste of professional life as a high proportion take sandwich courses. Even more take part in some form of shorter work placement scheme.
Creative talent is nurtured. The university established the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival 30 years ago and the Huddersfield Literature Festival is now in its second year. A new creative arts building is set for completion in 2008.
Teacher training is also high-profile. Huddersfield is one of 11 government Centres for Excellence in Teacher Training, which will receive £900,000 funding over the next three years.
Huddersfield does its utmost to attract applications from those who might not traditionally go to university. A recent initiative has targeted young people who have spent time in care. Nearly half of students receive bursaries, which are worth £1,000 for household incomes up to £17,910, half that for incomes up to £25,000.

Open days October 24.
