Hull is one of the best places to study in Britain, according to the students themselves. In the first three national student surveys, they have put Hull comfortably in the top 10 multifaculty institutions on each occasion.
Official reviews of teaching conducted from 1992 until 2001 found no fewer than 20 centres of excellence here with strength in shortage subjects such as chemistry and physics, as well as drama, politics and American studies for which Hull is better known. Seven subjects – music, history, English, Asian studies, politics, law and geography – were rated world-class in 2001, with more success anticipated in the new round of assessments next year.
All of this academic excellence is available for a bit of a steal because Hull remains an unfashionable destination; there are not even four applications per place to study here. But Hull students go on to achieve well. This year’s 5% graduate unemployment rate is the highest for some years – the university often ranks in the top 10 nationally for low rates of graduate unemployment.
The most significant academic development of the past year is the establishment of a pharmacy degree which will admit its first students next September. It is the latest addition to Hull’s burgeoning medical/healthcare portfolio, which took off with the establishment of the Hull York medical school in 2003. Biosciences and nursing are among the university’s top-rated subjects for teaching quality.
The university has a second campus, 40 miles from base in Scarborough. It offers a range of business, sport, theatre, music, environmental and teacher training degrees, set amid the fish and chips and sand and surf of this enduringly popular seaside resort.
