Lancaster was shortlisted for our University of the Year title in 2006, an acknowledgement of its international reputation for outstanding research and the high-quality teaching of undergraduates. It breaks back into our elite top 20 this year for the first time since 2002. Founded in 1964, it is undergoing a multi-million-pound makeover. Nearly 3,400 extra student rooms have been created and by next year a further 963 will have been refurbished or built across Lancaster’s eight undergraduate colleges.
The colleges are all on a pleasant parkland campus on the edge of the city, with the mountains of the Lake District to the north forming a dramatic backdrop. The so-called Spine, an undercover walkway running the length of the campus (because, yes, it does rain a lot here) brings the residential, social and academic areas together. The city (10 minutes away by bus) may be small but its nightlife packs a punch with a plethora of clubs and pubs.
Lancaster has some of the best green credentials of any university. The Lancaster Environment Centre has just completed a £20m development which brings together geography and environmental departments under one roof. The university has always been in the academic vanguard of research into the environment; it was one of the first to establish a department of environmental science and to make ecology a full degree subject. A BSc in geography, specialising in environmental change, is among the courses to be introduced from next year. A BEng and an MEng in sustainable engineering continue the ecofriendly theme.
Just under half the students benefit from a bursary, scholarship or subject award to help meet tuition fees.
This month’s second intake of medical students will make use of the clinical anatomy learning centre that opened in February. Fifty students a year will study for a University of Liverpool medical degree taught exclusively at Lancaster.
Students get the chance to live on campus for at least one year (often two). The arts scene flourishes and sport is boosted by intercollegiate rivalry and an annual Roses contest with the University of York.

Open days September 22.
