Kent calls itself the UK’s European university both on account of its geographic location as the closest British university to Europe and its physical presence on both sides of the English Channel. Recent developments more than justify the tag of being a regional university (with campuses in Canterbury, Chatham and at Wye College), but with the Brussels campus and Kent’s involvement as one of five partners (and the only nonFrench one) in the bilingual University of the Transmanche, it can claim to be Britain’s only international university.
Applications are up sharply this year to study courses that straddle the traditional and vocational. The latter is largely the result of the Universities at Medway initiative which has brought higher education to a deprived part of the county through a collaboration between Kent, Canterbury Christ Church and Greenwich universities, plus Mid-Kent College. Degrees in journalism and the news industry, law, medicines management, music technology and pharmacy give an indication of the breadth of the courses offered at the Medway campus, next to the historic Chatham naval dockyards.
The original campus in Canterbury is of 1960s vintage but overlooks the historic centre that is a firm fixture on the international tourist trail. Work is under way to add close to 550 rooms here. The students’ union runs the Venue, regarded as one of the best student clubs in the country, while the campus has a strong arts scene that benefits city and students alike with the Gulbenkian theatre and the eponymous, 300-seat arthouse cinema.
Students are happy with their lot as the latest student satisfaction survey shows. Just 10 multifaculty institutions rank higher.

Open days October 6 (Canterbury); October 13 (Medway).
