Leicester has been consistently among the top-ranking universities in England since the national student survey (NSS) was launched in 2005. This month’s figures place just Oxbridge and Loughborough higher among multifaculty institutions and it is not hard to see why students here are happy. Teaching quality has long been recognised as top-rate across the arts, sciences, social sciences and medical fields, securing 14 excellent ratings on the bounce from 1998.
Many students benefit from academics working at the cutting edge of research in their subject. The last research assessments gave genetics the highest 5* rating, but no fewer than 12 subjects (including history, pharmacology, law and pure/applied maths) fell into the next category, all of them considered international-class in up to half the work submitted.
A newly-admitted member of the 1994 Group of medium-sized universities with strong teaching and research profiles, Leicester is confident of more success when the outcome of the next round of assessments is announced next year. So are we.
A clear demonstration of all-round strength earns it a shortlisting for our University of the Year award.
Its rising star is acknowledged in an application rate this year that is up by more than 10%. Some science subjects – where Leicester is especially strong – have seen applications climb by more than half. Next September’s entrants will be the first to benefit from a new £28m university library, part of a £300m development plan.
The campus setting undoubtedly feeds into Leicester’s high levels of student satisfaction. There are rooms for all first-years, with plenty over for those wanting a further year living in. The city centre is close to hand. The students’ union is highly rated, too, winning a national award as the best in 2005 and the runner-up last year.
The university mirrors its location with a balanced intake not found in most other top-flight institutions. More than a quarter of the students are from working class backgrounds, about one in five are recruited from overseas, one in six undergraduates are mature and the majority are state school-educated.
Now 50 years old, Leicester is a modern university in every sense.

Open days September 22; October 6.
